At first, Cross didnât realize what had happened. One second he was looking up at his decoy and wondering how long it would take for the sniper to take the bait. A split-second later, the binoculars exploded as a bullet punched right through them. The hat went flying and a piece of the binoculars snapped off and flew past Crossâs face, nicking his cheek.
At what seemed like the same instant, a muted cough came from Yamashitaâs rifle.
CRUCK.
Less than a second later, the sickening sound of impact came back from the opposite end of the crash site.
âClear,â Yamashita said. His voice was quiet and subdued, but he didnât whisper.
Cross pressed a hand to his cheek. His mitten came away with a thin, short line of blood from where the bit of shrapnel had cut him. âYou sure you got him?â
Yamashita gave a small shudder that only Cross was close enough to see. âI have eyes on the target now, Commander,â he said. âI got him.â He said the last three words so quietly they almost disappeared in the icy wind.
âDoes he have a spotter?â Cross asked. He knew Yamashita well enough by now to know not to thank him or praise the quality of his shooting.
âNo,â Yamashita replied.
âMust have been a sentry,â Cross speculated. âProbably radioed in as soon as he saw us.â
âI would have,â Yamashita agreed.
Cross frowned. âThat means either reinforcements are coming, or theyâre going to be holed up waiting for us when we get to Lost Aspen.â
âEither way, we donât have much time to wait around, sir,â Yamashita said.
Cross nodded. âGear up and get your shorts back on. Take your partner and head up the path. Scout the way and find out what you can. Weâll join you shortly.â
âSir,â Yamashita said. He waved downhill to get Jannatiâs attention and signaled the Marine to join him. They paired up and Yamashita explained Crossâs orders. Jannati nodded and got his gear together.
Cross descended the hill to address the remaining men. âSniperâs down,â he began, âbut itâs more than likely the enemy knows weâre here and figures weâre on the way. Theyâre either going to meet us halfway or dig in and let us come to them.â
âAnd theyâre probably going to start executing the civilians,â Dyer said under his breath. âSo there are no witnesses.â
âYouâll speak when I ask for your opinion,â Cross snapped at him.
Dyer flinched. âSir, yessir,â he drawled. His tone was low and flippant, but he broke eye contact under the force of Crossâs unwavering glare.
âGear up,â Cross said to his men. âWeâre moving out.â
